SOFER Initiative in collaboration with Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST) carried out the WASH campaign at Mkpanak, Ibeno, Akwa Ibom State. This community does not have access to safe and affordable drinking water, as also the fact that they practice open defecation, as such the beach was healthy enough to attract tourists.
Therefore, the WASH campaign became a necessity for SOFER Initiative who funded the clean-up activities in the beach area, with free distribution of hygiene and sanitation materials to the community residents, while raising awareness about their economic challenges which had direct implications on their sanitation and hygiene behaviours. After the execution of this project, Multinational Oil Corporation- Exxon Mobil operating in the area, and other stakeholders in the community started to adapt accordingly, and the tourism value of the coastal community started to pick up. This campaign won Mr. Emmanuel Sofa our national coordinator and volunteer an award from the United Nations Environment.
